Negotiating: Tying the Knot
- Send to friend
Negotiating a deal is challenging, especially when trying to balance the needs of both parties involved. In Negotiating: Tying the Knot we see the challenges of Charlie and Kate. They are a pair of business people who meet while helping a common customer. They fall right into the difficult business of trying to negotiate a relationship. Each discovers through trial and error that the process of negotiating is both a business and life skill.
Kate learns a valuable lesson after attempting to dictate every part of their first date. She finds out that negotiating requires asking questions. They each disagree about who should pay the check, until they grasp the concept behind the next step: bottom lines must be flexible.
Charlie and Kate then discover that they must learn to manage emotions when they engage in a discussion about family budget and an intimidating list of needs. Next Kate fails to make her needs clear when handling domestic chores. She takes a second attempt, this time approaching with a high pitch that allows the couple to come to an amicable agreement.
The honeymoon turns into another negotiating nightmare as Kate wants to jaunt off to Greece while Charlie would rather adventure in the jungle. It seems like an impasse, until they learn to trade points instead of conceding. They go on to learn how to avoid ultimatums and threats and successfully navigate the most important negotiation: tying the knot.
