Being a correctional officer is one of the toughest, most responsible jobs in law enforcement, and new officers are often nervous or afraid when they arrive at their first facility. In this program, a broad group of seasoned officers reduces those anxieties by sharing the realities of the job – the importance of asking questions, of being able to admit mistakes and ask for help, of becoming attuned to inmates’ street smarts and alert to attempts at manipulation. They speak of the need to be firm, fair and consistent in the treatment of inmates, while encouraging new officers to develop decision-making and teamwork skills as they learn to handle the requirements of this vital and challenging profession.
